NEW IPOH BBQ is a culinary gem nestled in the heart of Kuching, Sarawak, offering an authentic Mandarin dining experience that brilliantly captures the essence of Ipoh-style barbecue and traditional Chinese flavors. Located on Jalan Sekama, this welcoming eatery is a must-visit for anyone craving comfort food with a distinctive regional twist.
The menu at NEW IPOH BBQ is a celebration of bold, savory delights that appeal to both the adventurous and the comfort food lover. Among their standout dishes, the Roasted Chicken Mee is a harmonious blend of tender roasted chicken served atop flavorful mee noodles bathed in a savory broth – each bite warm and soothing, breaking down the aromatic melding of spices and textures beautifully. Another popular choice is the Sio Bak Rice: crispy seasoned pork resting on fragrant rice, complemented perfectly by a savory sauce and fresh vegetables that uplift the dish with vibrant freshness.
For rice lovers, the Roasted Chicken Rice and Char Siew Rice are superbly executed classics. The roasted chicken here boasts a delightful crisp skin while remaining juicy underneath, paired expertly with chili sauce and light soy that bring an exciting kick without overpowering the palate. The Char Siew, when available, features sweet-flavored Chinese BBQ pork that melts in your mouth, a testament to their skillful marination and roasting techniques.
Sides and a la carte options add ample variety and balance. The Beansprouts, stir-fried with garlic and soy sauce, provide a fresh and crisp counterpoint to the heavier BBQ flavors, while the Three Mixed For 1 Person platter is a fantastic sampler for those who wish to savor multiple flavors in one meal. Even the humble Braised Egg and fragrant, chicken-stock-infused rice enhance the meal experience, showing attention to every detail.
Dining at NEW IPOH BBQ is not just about food, but an experience defined by hearty portions and a convivial atmosphere. It’s a lively spot often bustling with locals during lunch, underlining its popularity and authenticity. Patrons frequently note the efficient service and relatively short waiting times despite the crowd, demonstrating a well-managed kitchen eager to serve quality dishes promptly.
Many diners, like Lawrence Cornelius, laud the generous portion sizes—perfect for family lunches—while Donny Lau raves about the “glistening, goldenbrown crispy pork belly” that offers a gratifying textural contrast between crunchy crackling and juicy meat. The light soup and refreshing cucumber slices served on the side further elevate the meal, balancing richness with clarity of flavors. Even first-time visitors like Martinus Lau are drawn back by the tempting roast chicken and the ever-elusive Char Siew, speaking volumes of the crave-worthy quality that defines this spot.
The newly opened spacious venue provides a comfortable and inviting environment, enhanced by additional hawker-style stalls nearby offering further variety and dining options. This community-style layout not only broadens your culinary journey but also creates a vibrant, open-air feel, perfect for communal dining and casual get-togethers.
Although parking can be a bit scarce and the roasted pork skin occasionally runs a touch firmer than expected, these minor shortcomings do little to diminish the overall dining pleasure. In fact, they reflect the authenticity and popularity of an unpretentious local favorite that puts food quality front and center.
For those exploring Kuching’s rich food scene, NEW IPOH BBQ stands out as a beacon of Mandarin culinary tradition infused with Ipoh’s iconic barbecue flair. Its blend of comforting dishes, flavorful sauces, and lively dining ambiance promises a memorable meal that will leave you eager to return again and again.

The glistening, golden-brown crispy pork belly sits atop fragrant, fluffy rice, nice! Each piece of pork has a tantalizing balance of crackling skin, tender meat, and a hint of juicy fat, making it irresistible. Paired with a light soup on the side, refreshing cucumber slices, and a bold cup of coffee, this meal promises a symphony of textures and flavors.

Nice Ipoh BBQ here. We normally ordered the three meat set. The roasted pork skin is abit hard. Others are ok. You can order other food from the small stalls next to the shop. Very reasonable price.

Crowded and packed during lunch hours. Overall, the pork, rice and soup were all delicious. There are some new open air style hawker stalls beside it that you can sit and dine in, adding to the variety of menu at this place.
